Adventures in Joblessness, Trois.
Of those of you fucking off at work, heres a little something those of us looking for work are dealing with...
This posting: This is the THIRD TIME the Academy of Art College has posted this exact same job description. I'm not even going to get into how most HR departments don't even know the difference between and engineer or a designer. Out of frustration, this it the "cover letter" I sent in with the stinky old resume:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Hello, Academy of Art HR Department, I saw your third reposting of this position on craigslist. I'm sending in my resume for the third time. It has been redone a little, but I'm still the same person. As I've told you before; I really would like the chance to work with putting courses online with the instructors, doing something useful with my skillset instead of just chasing the almighty dollar. I work well with users of all skill levels, and I teach new skills in a way that generally sticks and stays stuck. My skills are fairly skewed towards the web engineering side, writing backend applications that are typically fairly transparent to frontend users. My talents with Photoshop and the other members of its visual design software family are limited to functional use, getting things done and taking the next step with what designers have prepared. (On top of that, of COURSE I know how the MS Office suite works... Please. That shouldn't even be in the job posting.) So here it is, resume #3 for your posting #3. You think it could possibly be that only one person can't, or maybe just possibly WON'T do this job? You make it sound like the person is going to be magically recreating the entire website doing the job that should use an entire team of people. Maybe HR needs to talk to IT a little more about what is needed and how this stuff works. Stop yanking all of us looking for work around. Either redo your job posting so you're either looking for a designer OR an engineer, or start answering people when they email you. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - yep. I think this time I just may get a callback! By the way, this is the autoresponse you get. I've gotten it three times now. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -------- Original Message -------- From: Ng, Sara <SNg@academyart.edu> To: 'SlappyJack' <slappyjack@slappyjack.com> Subject: RE: CraigsList Posting - Web Designer Date: Mon, 18 Aug 2003 10:52:56 -0700 Thank you for submitting your resume to the Academy of Art College. If we feel we have a job opportunity that matches your qualifications, you will hear from us within two to four weeks. If you do not hear from us within the two to four weeks , your resume will remain on file with us for six months for future opportunities. We wish you success in your career endeavors. Sincerely, Human Resources Academy Art College 79 New Montgomery St. San Francisco, CA 94105 www.academyart.edu - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - It is, of course, total bullshit In other fun news, yesterday I learned that my own wife forgot that this was the entire month that my birthday was in. She would totally have not known had shamus? not said "yeah, we leave on the 28th, same as my mom's and slappy's birthdays." Yeah. I'll be taking applications for the newly created position of "Mistress" starting very, very soon. Corporate wonks need not apply. Slap out. 18 Aug 03 Addendum - Same Day I decided to post a hunk of this on CraigsList's Rants and Raves. (The AOAC job posting, not the thing about the wife forgetting my birthday, though I should have.) Here are a chunks of a couple of comments I've gotten so far:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Many MANY times, especially in the higher ed and technical fields, jobs are posted because they have a legal obligation to do it publically. However, those jobs are already pretty well slated to go to someone who is already doing them in an interim capacity. Sounds like this is the case with the academy of art. Frankly, i havent heard enough good publicity for the AOAC that I would even WANT to send someone I know to interview for a job, but hey if that is your dream -- who am I to talk you out of it!? If higher Ed is what you want -- consider subscribing to the Chronicle of Higher Education -- where the nationwide listing for all higher ed jobs are listed. It is how i got my job in Higher Ed....it would work better for you, i think! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - With regards to http://www.craigslist.org/sfc/art/14949748.html That this is prime http://fuckthatjob.com/ fodder. There's a reason that they put "Reposting this message elsewhere is NOT OK." I do agree that their dumbshit job posting either has to be filled with what's out there, or has to go. They want two people for half the price, I would bet. It has more contradictory acronyms than an Apple Job Posting. To the academy (note the lowers) You can either have a designer or a coder. Not both. Most of the materials that you teach with concerning media or info architecture SAY this. Your ad is STUPID. You discredit yourselves. Do you use Unix or Windows? You want both. Sounds like you have a clusterfucked spaghetti system that no one wants to touch to me. Earth to st00pid HR. Don't piss off geeks who know better than you. You'll find that most have loooong memories and your rep will suffer. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 0 comments
